Saturday, the great Swiss mountain biker Nino Schurter won his third world championship. Schurter is a great all-round racer, but he’s also noted for his superb technical skills, especially through “rock gardens” – sections where racers must find a way over or through a mess of big, nasty boulders.
Inspired by Schurter’s incredible descents of the rock garden sections on the world champs course in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, I decided to try to ride the Beast down a set of rough stone steps at Carleton – a five-foot stretch that I have been wanted to ride for a long time. And what better audience than the girls? Vivi manned the camera.
