Now this is a gathering of talent: a photograph of dozens of jazz luminaries, all assembled one morning in Harlem in 1958. I love the close-up of Monk, two years after Brilliant Corners. Mingus looks less genius-like than he would, even though he was then just a year from recording Ah Um. Where, I wonder, was Duke Ellington? Couldn't he take the "A" train that day?
