Virtual Conferencing

Wednesday brought a new work experience – using Skype to participate in a conference panel. Colleagues and I were revisiting a previous discussion on social media in liberal-arts college fundraising. Since I couldn’t make it to the actual conference, I used Carleton’s slick video studio to video-conference in. The setup was pretty nice, featuring this huge monitor above me

And an array of tech goodies in front of me – two smaller monitors and a fast Mac, plus my own iPhone and iPad, to monitor my Twitter feed.
This is what I apparently looked like at the other end. My wit and wisdom is invisible:

On the whole, though, the session went well. Skype actually facilitated something like a real conversation, which was pretty satisfying and fun. It was a good experience.
