No sooner had I hoped for snow yesterday than the weather turned cold and everything turned white. After seeing Grandma off before breakfast and then burning a few hours with quiet indoor activities (including a mystifying chant of “Barack Obama/What’s the problem?” [which rhymes when Vivi says it]), the girls and I headed outside to enjoy the snow.
We were only out there for 45 minutes or so, and only walked a mile, but the girls burned so much energy jumping, running, jogging, leaping, and snow-angeling that they literally staggered back to the house – where Mama had actually done research on the internet to figure out how to make hot cocoa from the random ingredients on hand. That is dedicated mothering. Needless to say, the girls thoroughly enjoyed their “hot dodo” (as Vivi called it) – just the thing for four rosy cheeks.

We didn’t have any store-bought mix, and I didn’t know if homemade cocoa required powdered milk and/or powdered non-dairy coffee creamer (I’d seen recipes for both, but had neither on hand). A simple brew of baking cocoa and sugar mixed into hot milk worked just fine, although it ended up way too sweet.
The hot cocoa recipe should be on the side of the cocoa box – my Mom made it all the time. I have the homemade mix recipe if you want it. We often just stick with the warm milk and Ovaltine recipe.
We did a wee bit of downtown shopping followed by hot mocha at Blue Monday. Felt GREAT to be outside on a snowy day.
It snowed for 5 days straight at le Foret Montmorency in Quebec. Then, when we got home today, it was snowing here too. Probably not enough to ski, but I’m hopeful.
Mnmom—Ha! Didn’t even think to look on the side of the cocoa box! (rolling my eyes at myself here.)
I was wondering why your box of cocoa didn’t have a recipe on the side panel! 🙂
